My Story: Building a Brand That Parents Can Trust

How I’m Building a Brand That Reflects My Family Values

As a mom, I know firsthand how fast kids grow—and how hard it is to keep up. My son is one of those kids who seems to sprout overnight, but only in one direction: taller. Every few months, his pants would suddenly transform into high waters, leaving his ankles out in the cold. The problem? While he kept getting taller, his waist stayed the same. Shopping for clothes that fit was an endless battle—everything was either too short or constantly falling down.

One day, after yet another frustrating shopping trip, I thought to myself, Why isn’t there a better way?

My Inspiration

Honestly my Inspiration grew from frustration, my son is super thin but his father is over 6ft so he grows like a literal bean stalk. So my son cannot size up by the standard sizing he needs a 12 month waist by a 2T length. I already had a bit of sewing experience so I would cinch and cinch but I felt like I shouldn’t have to. I’m a single mom with 2 under 2 and I just don't have the time and definitely not the energy to tailor and hem. Plus trying to use a sewing machine or needles around a toddler feels like a targeted crime.

Brainstorm process

So originally I wanted to create a line of children’s pants that were targeting slim children using men pants sizing, allowing mothers to pick out pants by waist size and length. After a while I realized that wouldn’t truly solve the problem and the amount of inventory that would require is massive.

My next idea was lining pants in a softer material and making the pants in a longer length than necessary ,tucking them in the pant leg and putting a temporary stitch that can be removed to extend the length 2 times. While that solves the growth problem it doesn't solve my inherent laziness, I'm not wanting to sit and pull out stitches especially if I don't notice they've grown taller until they have put them on.

There was the brief idea to make them longer and just cuff them till needed but I was worried it would constantly come down when they were running around, get torn, etc. plus it was bulky.

I then had what I considered a brilliant idea “How has no one thought of this?” I said to myself (and to my mom on facetime) The innovative idea to fasten the extended true hem inside of the pants in a way that was super quick to undo for parents, and easy enough for an older toddler to do themselves if shown how.

Idea to Production

I currently as of January 2025 am working on finalizing the design, testing different ways to get it to stick, the order of construction while keeping the overall design clean.

I don't have the seed money yet to go through the usual route of designing my product, getting a pattern made, getting a tech pack made, finding manufacturers who can source fabric and having multiple runs of samples until the idea comes to fruition.

So I currently sew and sew away, finding the perfect solution, the best fabric and oddities for the pants, create the patterns myself and turning idea to sample and adjusting myself. I have learned and continued to learn so many things about the process and hope to launch a collection of this novel idea in 2025.

My Goal

Roots and Rivets isn’t just about solving a problem; it’s about giving parents peace of mind and helping kids feel comfortable and confident in clothing made just for them. With thoughtful, sustainable design and a focus on slim, tall kids like my own, we’re here to make life just a little easier for busy families.

I also aim for the intersection of neutral ‘sad beige’ clothing and colorful graphic design I want an aesthetic that is loved by both children and parents.

When kids grow, your wallet doesn’t have to shrink.
